Atkinson/Burton

John Atkinson and Ann Burton

John and Ann left Lincolnshire, England with their sons, David aged 8 and John William aged 2. John was an agricultural labourer aged 30 and Ann was also 30. John and David could both read and write but Ann could only read. They paid three pounds for the voyage. John died on the voyage. They arrived in Sydney and bought a farm and settled in Maitland. They had 8 more children, several of whom died in infancy. John and Ann both lived long lives. I have further records from the Maitland Cemetary about members of the family who are buried there.

John and Ann had a daughter, Mary, who died as an infant in England. John's parents were Samuel Atkinson, a farmer, and Ann Burrows. I think they had a large family but have not yet checked the census records. Ann's parents were Thomas Burton, a farmer, and Susannah. This is all I know about her parents.

Joseph Munro and Maria Ellis

One of John and Ann's sons, Jonathan, my mother's grandfather, married Maria Ellis Munro, the daughter of Joseph Munro and Maria Ellis. Joseph emigrated from Sutherland, Scotland, on the Bourneuf in 1852, and Maria emigrated from Devon, England, on the Credenda the following year. Joseph died of cancer when Maria was still a little girl. I have been told that Jonathan and Maria met when Maria was working as a dressmaker in the goldfields.
