Henderson/Ramsay

First family: Edward Henderson

My grandfather Edward Henderson was brought out to Australia as a naval architect during the war; he left left Tilbury 4 September 1915 for Sydney on the Medina. He married Beatrix Atkinson, the daughter of Jonathan and Maria Atkinson.

Edward was the son of Captain Edward Henderson and Charlotte Ramsay. He had a sister, Barbra. His father died while his family was visiting Edward and Beatrix in Sydney, and is buried in the Rookwood Cemetary.

Edward Henderson and Charlotte Ramsay married in Lerwick in 1877 and lived in Leith. Edward was Ordinary Apprentice Seaman on the Barque "Cotherstone" from 1871-1874 - (see also his indenture papers), they make interesting reading. He later became a ship's captain - I think of the Ancona - and died while visiting his son's family in Sydney in 1919. I think Robert Ramsay the photographer was a relative - maybe an uncle - of Charlotte. She was the daughter of William Ramsay and Elizabeth Scott, according to the page from their bible which I have.

Capt. Edward Henderson

Edward Henderson's parents were James Henderson and Barbra Henderson (that was apparently her maiden name). They married in Tingwall in 1844. James was born in Lerwick, but his father James, the son of John, was born in Setter. A part of a letter from William Henderson from Jackson Bay, British Columbia, copied in Barbra Henderson's handwriting (the daughter of Edward Henderson) states that "Marion Edwardson's husband, James Henderson had half of Setter with Father's Father & lived in South Setter till 1846 when they moved to town and the new house was built. James Taylor had North Setter, about that time...Marion..married James Henderson, son of John Henderson who had 7 sons in Setter.....Great grandfather had 6 brothers....James Henderson married Barbara Henderson of Lou near Uridale... Marion Edwardson's Father was James Edwardson who removed from Yell to Easthouse with sheep, cows & a big stock of horses..."
