Camping and hiking

These are the camps and hikes we go on:

Linking camps are for scouts who are linking up from cubs. We teach them basic campcraft skills and go on a dayhike.
At Group Camps we join the other sections of Kama and do some of the activities with them. All the cooking is done by the Quartermaster and parents in the big marquee. We sleep in marquees too.
On Green Level and Blue Level hikes, the scouts do all the planning. We have to show that we can plan the hike and conduct the hike in safety, including the ability to navigate. Blue level is 15 km and Green level is 30 km.
At Winter Skills camps we camp and go skiing.
At Cotter Shield, we camp and compete with other scout troops, testing the skills we've worked and our teamwork.
At Swaggie survivor, we pack only really basic gear in a swag - a blanket or small tarp tied up in a bundle, hike to our campsite, build our own shelters from tarps, ropes and sticks, built bridges and camp gadgets, and sleep in our shelters.

Other outdoor activities

As well as camping and hiking, some of the other outdoor activities we do are:

The Pinnacle is our 'backyard' and we go there for navigation skills and wide games, during the day and in the dark.

What's a night drop?

This is where scouts are blindfolded and put into cars and are dropped off at a secret destination that only the leaders know about. Then we have to make our way through the Canberra streets to the finishing destination, where the leaders and other patrols meet us. This activity helps us learn navigation skills as we have to read a map but we don't know what suburb we're in.
