Citizenship - Scout's Own
What is a Scout's Own?
This is a question we often hear from our scouts. We usually dodge the question and instead, do a Scouts Own and then say "There, now - that was a Scout's Own". We also have a reflection time at the end of each meeting. The reflections and Scout's Own times can be initiated by scouts or the leaders, but they are only offering the space and time, and giving some broad guidance to help the scouts bring out their own ideas.
Ours have been many and varied, including:
- sitting under the stars listening to the sounds around us
- talking about the differences and similarities between religions and belief systems
- thinking about the soldiers, nurses and other people at war and their families, while visiting the War Memorial
Prayers and reflections
Our reflections at the end of our meetings are often simply "Hope everyone had a good time and nobody got hurt", but we are attempting to be more creative and thoughtful. Here is a reflection that was written by one of our scouts and used at a meeting:
May scouts world-wide live in friendship and safety
May rain fall in the drought stricken areas
May people who are sick be made well
May the countries in war live in peace and harmony
May the people forgive each other
And help us to do what we can to make these things happen.
We have been inspired by John Marsden's book, "Prayer for the 21st Century", to put the reflections on paper.
