Here are some ways we have learned navigation (more information will be put up on the website when I have time):

Lantern stalk (easy orienteering in the park at night, with torches (flashlights if you're not Aussie) and foil-covered balloons

Orienteering (go with your local orienteering group)

Afternoon in the local bushland, learning basics of map reading, compass skills, radio and GPS

Practising building and following a trail using trail markers made from sticks and rocks (with stashes of mars bars at the end)
